The Green Futures Initiative is a youth-led, not-for-profit organization that inspires action for a healthier planet. We focus on tree growing to address food insecurity, climate education, and storytelling. Our team is composed of 65 percent women and 100 percent youth under the age of 35.
Founded on October 21, 2021, by Jonah Kirabo, a Ugandan storyteller and environmentalist, the Green Futures Initiative aims to raise awareness about climate change among Ugandan youth, children, and women. Our approach involves storytelling, tree growing to combat food insecurity, and climate education.
After graduating from Makerere University in January 2019 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, majoring in Marketing, Kirabo worked as a journalist in Uganda.
Witnessing the profound impact of climate change on vulnerable groups, he noticed a lack of awareness among them. Challenges like food insecurity, hunger, child marriage, and regional droughts and floods were often unrecognized as consequences of climate change.
Motivated to address these issues, Kirabo conducted research and interviews on the relationship between climate change and various challenges. In August 2019, he became the first Ugandan selected for the prestigious LOCALINTERNational Internship Program hosted in four cities in Turkey.
There, Kirabo received training in project management and discovered how youth can contribute to addressing community challenges.
Later that year, Kirabo was chosen by the Egyptian government to participate in the Africa Presidential Leadership Program at the National Training Academy. Alongside 99 youth from across Africa, he gained a broader perspective on climate change as a global problem.
Upon returning to Uganda, Kirabo utilized his newfound skills and knowledge to embark on the journey of launching the Green Futures Initiative, which became a reality in October 2021.
Initially focused on tree growing, the initiative expanded its scope to include climate education for both students and out-of-school youth. This expansion has empowered hundreds of young people, turning them into green ambassadors in their respective communities.
Recognizing the power of storytelling, Kirabo further expanded the initiative in 2023 to incorporate storytelling as a means to inspire action.
